ὕστριξ: -ῐχος, ὁ και ἡ, σκαντζόχοιρος, σε Ηρόδ. (αμφίβ. προέλ.).
Middle Liddell
ὕστριξ, ῐχος,
the porcupine, Hdt. [deriv. uncertain]
Frisk Etymology German
ὕστριξ: -ιχος
{hústriks}
Forms: (Gen. pl. -ίγγων Opp. wie von ὕστριγξ)
Grammar: m. f.
Meaning: Stachelschwein, Igel (Hdt., Arist., Ael.), pl. übertr. ‘Schweine- borste’ (Pl. Kom.).
Derivative: Davon ὑστριχίς, -ίδος f. Karbatsche, zur Züchtigung der Sklaven (Ar. u.a.).
Etymology : Nicht sicher erklärt. Oft (s. Schwyzer-Debrunner 517 m. A. 4 u. Lit.) in ὕστριξ zerlegt, von θρίξ, τριχός Haar und ὑσ- in ὕστερος (s.d.); somit eig. mit emporstehenden Haaren, was logisch gewiß tadellos ist. Die Alten (z. B. Pl. Kom.) haben es offenbar mit ὗς Schwein verbunden. — Vgl. ὕσπληξ.
