[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Παράλληλος υποκοριστικός τ. του τιθή-νη «τροφός» με εκφραστική ανάπτυξη δεύτερου -τ- και χωρίς επίθημα -νη (βλ. λ. τιθήνη). Κατά μία άποψη, η λ. τίτθη είχε αποκλειστικά τη σημ. της γυναίκας που βυζαίνει, ενώ η λ. τιθήνη της γυναίκας πού είχε την υπόλοιπη επιμέλεια του παιδιού μετά τον απογαλακτισμό].
