   A tie-beam, τοῖχοι μεγάρων καλαί τε μεσόδμαι Od.19.37, cf. 20.354 (expld. by Aristarch. as = μεσόστυλα, by others as τὰ μεταξὺ τῶν δοκῶν διαστήματα, cf. Hsch.); κρεμάσαι χρὴ τὸν ἄνθρωπον τῶν ποδῶν πρὸς μεσόδμην Hp.Art.70; expld. as τὸ μέγα ξύλον ἀπὸ τοῦ ἑτέρου τοίχου πρὸς τὸν ἕτερον διῆκον Gal. ad Hp.l.c. (18(1).738), cf. IGll. cc., SIG 248 N8 (Delph., iv B. Zwischenbau; – a) Od. 19, 37. 20, 354 werden καλαὶ μεσόδμαι neben den τοῖχοι genannt, blendenartig vertiefte Zwischenräume, zwischen vortretenden Wandpfeilern, Hesych. erkl. μεσόστυλα. – b) der Querbalken des Schiffes, der in der Mitte hohl ist, um den Mastbaum darin aufzurichten, κοίλη, Od. 2, 424. 15, 289; Ap. Rh. 1, 563. – c) später übh. ein Quer- od. Tragbalken, bes. an welchem man große Lasten wägt, Wagebalken, Hippocr., VLL.
