Frisk Etymological English

κάναθρον
Grammatical information: n.
Meaning: cane or wicker carriage (X. Ages. 8, 7, Plut. Ages. 19, H., Eust.).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: - Perh. from κάννα reed with θρο-suffix (cf. Chantraine Formation 373f.). Lidén I 227ff. assumes a compound from κάννα and a word for wagon(basket), in ἄθρας ἅρμα. `Ρόδιοι H. (s. v.) which is most improbable; the gloss is considered corrupt by Latte. On the suffix Fur. 303 n. 39.

Frisk Etymology German

κάνναθρον: κάναθρον
{kánnathron}
Grammar: n.
Meaning: ‘geflochtener Wagen(korb)’ (X. Ages. 8, 7, Plut. Ages. 19, H., Eust.).
Etymology : Wohl von κάννα Rohr mit θρο-Suffix (vgl. Chantraine Formation 373f.), wenn nicht mit Lidén Streitberg-Festgabe 227ff. Kompositum aus κάννα und einem Wort für ‘Wagen(korb)’, das in ἄθρας· ἅρμα. Ῥόδιοι H. erhalten ist; s. d.
