[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Η λ. εμφανίζει τη μηδενισμένη βαθμίδα της ΙΕ ρίζας lei- / slei- «γλιστρώ» (πρβλ. ολί-σθάνω), με παρέκταση b, προθεματικό φωνήεν ὀ- και επίθημα -ρός (πρβλ. κυδ-ρός, ψυχ-ρός). Η λ. συνδέεται με αγγλοσαξ. slipor, αρχ. άνω γερμ. sleffar «ολισθηρός», αρχ. ισλδ. sleipr, καθώς και με ρηματικούς τ., όπως αρχ. άνω γερμ. slῑfan γερμ. schleifen (βλ. και λ. ολισθαίνω)].
