[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Η λ. βλάξ φέρει επίθημα -ᾱκ-, που χρησιμοποιείται στον σχηματισμό υστερογενών παραγώγων της αττικής κυρίως κωμωδίας (πρβλ. γαύρᾱξ, πλούτᾱξ, στόμφᾱξ κ.ά). Πρόκειται μάλλον για πρωταρχικό σχηματισμό με ευρεία διάδοση, ο οποίος εξαιτίας του -- ερμηνεύεται ως δάνειο από μία μη ιωνική-αττική διάλεκτο. Η λ. βλᾱξ είναι πολύ πιθ. να συνδέεται με το μαλακός, δηλ. μλᾱξ (με μηδενισμένο το α' φωνήεν της δισύλλαβης ρίζας μαλᾱ-) > μβλᾱξ (με ανάπτυξη του -β-) > βλᾱξ (απλοποίηση του συμφωνικού συμπλέγματος με σίγηση του -μ- πρβλ. και βλώσκω). Η ρίζα μλᾱ- απαντά επίσης στο αρχ. ινδ. mlā- ta- «μαλακός» και στο αρχ. ιρλ. mlāith «μαλακός» (< mlā- ti-)].
