Meaning: dazwischen, inzwischen (ep. poet. seit Il., auch Hp., Eratosth.).
Etymology: Zum fakultativen -ς Schwyzer 404 u. 620. Die Ähnlichkeit mit ἐγγύς springt in die Augen, ob wegen gemeinsamen Ursprungs oder wegen Analogie (Risch ̨ 126 a), steht dahin. Nach Pisani Ist. Lomb. 73: 2, 47 zu βαίνω als "qui medius it" (?); ebenso über ἐγγύς und πρέσβυς (s. dd.). Auch im übrigen gehen die Erklärungsversuche parallel (s. Bq). Unwahrscheinlicher Versuch, μεσσηγύς und ἐγγύς mit ξύν zu verbinden, von Sánchez Ruipérez Emer. 15, 61 ff.
