ἀδευκής: -ές, λέξις παρ’ Ὁμήρ. ἀπαντῶσα μόνον ἐν Ὀδ., ὀλέθρῳ ἀδευκέϊ, Δ. 489· ἀδευκέα πότμον, Κ. 245· φῆμιν ἀδευκέα, Ζ. 273: ― οὕτω καὶ παρ’ Ἀπολλ. Ροδ. κτλ.· ― κοινῶς ἑρμηνεύεται, οὐχὶ γλυκύς, πικρός, σκληρὸς (δεῦκος γὰρ τὸ γλυκύ, λέγει ὁ Σχολ. τοῦ Ἀπολλ. Ροδ. 2. 267, πρβλ. Σχόλ. εἰς Ὀδ. Δ. 489, κτλ.), καὶ ὁ Νίκ. ἐν τοῖς Ἀλεξ. 328, μετεχειρίσθη δευκέϊ οἴνῳ, = γλυκέϊ. Ἀλλ’ οἱ Σχολιαστ. σχεδὸν πάντοτε προσθέτουσι καὶ ἄλλην σημασίαν, = ἀπεοικώς, ἀπροσδόκητος, ἀπροόρατος, ἀνείκαστος, ὁ Ἀπολλών. ἐν τῷ Λεξ. Ὁμ. ἑρμηνεύει, «ἀδευκεῖ, ἤτοι τῷ ἀπεοικότι; ἢ οἷον ἀδεχεῖ (ἴσως ἀδοκεῖ), ἀπροσδοκήτῳ.» Καὶ ὁ Κούρτιος δὲ δοξάζει ὡς πιθανόν, ἐπὶ ἐτυμολογικῶν λόγων στηριζόμενος, ὅτι ἡ τελευταία αὕτη σημασία εἶναι ἡ ἀληθὴς Ὁμηρική, ἡγούμενος ὅτι τὸ δευκής ἀνήκει εἰς τὴν αὐτὴν ῥίζαν εἰς ἣν καὶ τὸ δοκέω, πρβλ. ἐνδυκέως, Πολυδεύκης.
