Ὁ δὲ μὴ δυνάμενος κοινωνεῖν ἢ μηδὲν δεόμενος δι' αὐτάρκειαν οὐθὲν μέρος πόλεως, ὥστε ἢ θηρίον ἢ θεός → Whoever is incapable of associating, or has no need to because of self-sufficiency, is no part of a state; so he is either a beast or a god

A put to graze, drive afield, in Act., of the shepherd, καλλίτριχα μῆλα νομεύων Od.9.336; ἐνόμευε νομὸν κάτα πίονα μῆλα ib.217; ἀγέλην ν. Pl.Plt.265d:—Pass., metaph., of ἀνθρώπων ἀγέλαι, ib.295e. 2 βουσὶ νομοὺς ν. eat down the pastures with oxen, Lat. depascere, h.Merc.492. 3 abs., to be a shepherd, tend flocks, Theoc.20.35.
