• Prosodia: [ᾰ-]

Greek Monotonic
ἀήσῠλος: αντί αἴσυλος, πονηρός, διεστραμμένος, φαύλος, σε Ομήρ. Ιλ.

Frisk Etymological English
Grammatical information: adj.
Meaning: Ε 876 ἀήσυλα ἔργα (hapax).
Other forms: αἰήσυλον ἄνομον, κακοποιόν H.
Origin: XX [etym. unknown] PGX [probably a word of Pre-Greek origin] [probably a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: One proposes alteration of αἴσυλος unseemly, evil (αἴσυλα ῥέζειν Ε 403 etc.) (after ἄημι?, ἀήσυρος?). Otherwise Bechtel Lex., Brugmann Sächs. Ber. 1901, 94. Fraenkel Gl. 34, 1955, 307ff proposes *α(Ϝ)ισσυλα, from ἶσος; very doubtful. Fur. 253 points to the gloss with αι-, which implies a substr. word (he connects ἄητος, which may have a variant αἴητος).
Middle Liddell
Frisk Etymology German
ἀήσυλος: (ἅπ. λεγ. Ε 876 ἀήσυλα ἔργα).
{aḗsulos}
Etymology : Wahrscheinlich Umbildung von αἴσυλος frevelhaft (αἴσυλα ῥέζειν Ε 403 usw.) nach unbekanntem Vorbild (ἄημι?, ἀήσυρος?). Andere Erklärungen bei Bechtel Lex. und Brugmann Sächs. Ber. 1901, 94.
