[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Η αργεμώνη χρησιμοποιήθηκε κατά τον Διοσκουρίδη ως φάρμακο κατά της αρρώστιας άργεμος, αλλά δεν είναι βέβαιο αν πήρε από αυτό την ονομασία του. Δεν αποκλείεται ακόμη να προέρχεται από δάνεια (ξένη) λέξη, παρετυμολογικά μεταπλασμένη. Η ερμηνεία της λ. από το εβρ. 'argāmān «κόκκινη βαφή» είναι σημασιολογικά ελάχιστα ικανοποιητική.
