English (LSJ)
ὁ, leopard, Gal.5.134, Edict.Diocl.8.39, Theognost. Can.98.
German (Pape)
[Seite 29] ὁ, der Leopard, auch λεοντόπαρδος genannt, Sp.
Greek (Liddell-Scott)
λεόπαρδος: ὁ, λεοπάρδαλις, Θεογνώστ. Καν. σ. 98. 12, Ἐκκλ.
Frisk Etymological English
Grammatical information: m.
Meaning: leopard (Gal., Edict. Diocl.),
Other forms: also λεοπάρδαλις (s. Wessely Glotta, 6, 29 f.)
Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]
Etymology: Comp. of λέων and πάρδος (cf. Risch IF 59, 56f., Strömberg Wortstudien 12), the last of which is only known from Ael. NA 1, 31 (v.l. πάρδαλος); instead since Il. πάρδαλις. So prob. from Lat. pardus, leopardus formally influenced; cf. s. πάρδαλις. Incidentally λεο- for λεοντο-, s. Schwyzer 439; see also λεο-δράκων as name of a mythical being (Crete IVa).
Frisk Etymology German
λεόπαρδος: (Gal., Edict. Diocl., Kirchenschriftsteller u. a.),
{leópardos}
Forms: auch λεοπάρδαλις (s. Wessely Glotta, 6, 29 f.)
Grammar: m.
Meaning: Leopard.
Etymology: Mischungskomp. aus λέων und πάρδος (vgl. Risch IF 59, 56f., Strömberg Wortstudien 12), welch letzteres indessen nur Ael. NA 1, 31 (v.l. πάρδαλος) belegt ist; dafür seit Il. πάρδαλις. Somit wohl von lat. pardus, leopardus formal beeinflußt; vgl. s. πάρδαλις. Vereinzelt ist λεο- als Vorderglied für λεοντο-, s. Schwyzer 439; doch auch λεοδράκων Löwenschlange als N. eines mythischen Wesens (Kreta IVa).
