[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Πρόκειται για ινδοευρ. λ. που απαντά σε πολλές γλώσσες άλλοτε με θέμα σε -n- και άλλοτε σε -u-, πράγμα που πιθ. οφείλεται σε κάποια παλαιά μεταβολή θέματος και κλίσεως. Το θέμα με το έρρινο εμφανίζεται στα αρμ. krun-k, γαλλ. trigaranos «με τρεις γερανούς», ουαλ. garan, αγγλοσαξ. cran, αρχ. άνω γερμ. krαn-uh, ενώ το θέμα σε -υ- στα λατ. grūs λιθ. Gerve, αρχ. σλαβ. žeravŭ. Από την αρχική σημ. του πτηνού η λ. πήρε και άλλες σημασίες, όπως «είδος χορού στο οποίο μιμούνταν τις κινήσεις του πουλιού» και «μηχάνημα», του οποίου ο βραχίονας παρουσίαζε πιθ. ομοιότητα με το ράμφος του πουλιού. Τέλος, η μεταβολή του γένους και του τόνου της λ. κατά τις άλλες ονομασίες πτηνών σε -ός (πρβλ. αετός, πελαργός κ.λπ.) ή αναλογικά προς το ουρανός, με το οποίο συσχετίστηκε παρετυμολογικά].
