Η υπόθεση τών Αρχαίων ότι η λ. φιλήτης έχει σχηματιστεί από το απρμφ. αορ. ὑφελέσθαι του ρ. ὑφαιρῶ, -οῦμαι «ληστεύω, αφαιρώ, αποσπώ», μέσω ενός αμάρτυρου τ. ὑφειλέτης παραμένει ανεπιβεβαίωτη. Εξάλλου, η γρφ. φηλήτης είναι μτγν., οφείλεται σε παρετυμολ. επίδραση της λ. φηλός «απατεώνας» και δεν διευκολύνει την ετυμολόγηση της λ.].
