Etymology : Setzt zunächst ein *τιτιγών voraus (vgl. τρυγών, χελιδών, ἀηδών, alle mit -όνιον); ein onomatopoetisches τιτίζω, τιτίζοντας zwitschern wurde von Zenod. in Β 314 für τετριγῶτας gelegen. Rückbildung τιτίς, -ίδος f. N. eines kleinen Vogels, auch pudendum muliebre (Phot.). Daneben τίτυρος, τιτύρας als Vogelnamen (H.).
