English (LSJ)

[ῑ], ἡ,    A marjoram, Origanum viride, Diocl.Fr.150, Nic.Th. 626, Dsc.3.29, Gal.12.91.    II organy, Origanum heracleoticum, Dsc.3.27.

German (Pape)

[Seite 1481] ἡ, ein Kraut, eine Art Origanum; Nic. Ther. 626; Diosc.

Greek (Liddell-Scott)

κονίλη: ῑ, ἡ, φυτόν τι ἐκ τοῦ εἴδους τοῦ ὀριγάνου, Διοσκ. 3. 34, 56, Νικ. Θ. 626.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: kind of aromatic plant, Origanum, marjoram (Nic., medic., Dsc.).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Formation like ζωμίλη, μαρίλη a. o. (Chantraine Formation 249, Schwyzer 483), further unclear. Persson Beitr. 2, 809 n. 1 assumes connection with κνῖσα, κνίζω (because of the continuous smell). Lat. LW [loanword] cunīla (for which Fur. 361 assumes *κυνιλη, as o remains before n in Latin). He compares further (120) γονώνη ὀρίγανος H, and perhaps γονής, κώνητες θύρσοι H. (121). On -ιλ- as a Pre-Greek suffix Beekes, Pre-Greek, suffixes.

Frisk Etymology German

κονίλη: {koní̄lē}
Grammar: f.
Meaning: Art der aromatischen Pflanze Origanum, Majoran (Nik., Mediz., Dsk.).
Etymology : Bildung wie ζωμίλη, μαρίλη u. a. (Chantraine Formation 249, Schwyzer 483), sonst unklar. Persson Beitr. 2, 809 A. 1 vermutet Zusammenhang mit κνῖσα, κνίζω (wegen des stechenden Geruchs). Lat. LW cunīla.
