Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: v.
Meaning: to gaze around astonishedly (Hippon., Anacr., Herod.), ἐπαμφάλησεν ἐθαύμασε, περιεβλέψατο H.
Other forms: παμφαλῆσαι.
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]
Etymology: Reduplicated intensive in -άω (cf. on παμφαίνω) with dissimilation from *φαλ-φαλ-άω (Bechtel Dial. 3, 324), prob. from φαλός λευκός H., s. φαλακρός. On the meaning cf. e.g. λευκός : λεύσσω. -- Quite doubtful. λεύσσω is not derived from λευκ-ός. Furnée 161 equates it with παπταλάομαι (Lyc.) and assume that it is a Pre-Greek word.
