Other forms: younger κίχλα (Alex. Trall., Gp.; Solmsen Wortforsch. 260), Dor. κιχήλα (Epich. 157, Ar. Nu. 339). Cf. ἴχλα κίχλα H. and ἴσκλαι = κίχλαι H.
Derivatives: κιχλίζω giggle, laugh (Ar., Theoc., Herod.) with κιχλισμός; κιχλιδ-ιάω want to giggle (Com. Adesp. 1038; not quite certain).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Popular redupl. formation, but unclear (hardly to χελιδών (s. v.). A side form is ἴχλα (H.). See Thompson Birds s. v. (also on the diff. names of the bird). - Fur. 130 on κιχήλα. The variants point to a Pre-Greek word.
