Η λ. συνδέεται πιθ. με μεσσαπικά - ιλλυρικά ανθρωπωνύμια Ledrus, Laidius, Σκερδι-λαΐδας, καθώς και με λιθουαν. pa-laidas «χαλαρός, ελεύθερος», pa-laida και leidžiu «λύνω, αφήνω». Κατ' άλλους, η λ. συνδέεται ετυμολογικώς με το λαιμός].

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: adj.
Meaning: bold, impudent, shamless (hell. poet.: Call., Nic., Max.).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]
Etymology: Stemvowel and sufflx as in φαιδρός, αἰσχρός; on the αι-diphthong cf. also λαιός, σκαιός a. o. -- Krahe Corolla ling. 129ff. connects Messap.-Illyr. PN, e. g. Ledrus, Laidius, Σκερδι-λαΐδας, as well as the semantically unclear laidehiabas (adj. of Logetibas, s. on λαγχάνω), Po-laidehias; one connected further Lith. pa-láidas los(e), free, pa-láida licentiousness; so λαιδρός prop. los(e), elated?. Diff. ablaut in Lith. léidziu, léisti (let)free; on the Baltic group s. Fraenkel Wb. s. v. - Diff. Solmsen KZ 44, 171 (WP. 2, 393); see on λαιμός. - Fur. 199 connects λατραβός, λαθροῦν, λαιθαρύζω, λαιθυράζω, λαδρέω: uncertain. Unknown, poss. Pre-Greek.

Frisk Etymology German

λαιδρός: {laidrós}
Meaning: dreist, verwegen, schamlos (hell. Dicht.: Kall., Nik., Max.).
Etymology : Stammvokal und Sufflx wie in φαιδρός, αἰσχρός; zum αι-Diphthong vgl. noch λαιός, σκαιός u. a. — Krahe Corolla ling. 129ff. verknüpft damit messap. -illyr. PN, z. B. Ledrus, Laidius, Σκερδιλαΐδας, ebenso wie die semantisch unklaren laidehiabas (Beiwort zu Logetibas, s. zu λαγχάνω), Po-laidehias; dazu, sehr ansprechend, lit. pa-láidas ‘los(e), frei’, pa-láida Zügellosigkeit; λαιδρός somit eig. ‘los(e), ausgelassen’. Anderer Ablaut in lit. léidziu, léisti ‘(los)lassen’; über die weitverzweigte baltische Wortsippe s. Fraenkel Wb. s. v. — Anders Solmsen KZ 44, 171 (WP. 2, 393); vgl. zu λαιμός.
