A the right of seizing the ship or cargo of a foreign merchant, to cover losses received through him: generally, right of seizure, right of reprisal, prop. of goods (opp. ἀνδροληψία), σῦλον ἔχειν κατά τινος Arist.Oec.1347b23; ἐν σύλῳ when engaged in privateering, IG12(5).24.11 (Sicinos): but mostly in pl. σῦλαι or σῦλα, διὰ τὰς σύλας D.51.13; ὅπου ἂν σῦλαι μὴ ὦσιν Ἀθηναίοις where the Athenians have [to fear] no right of seizure, Syngr. ap.
