Frisk Etymological English

-ῶνος
Grammatical information: m.
Meaning: tick (louse of sheep), Pediculus ovis, Ixodes (Arist., Dsc., Plu.), also tree of castor oil, Ricinus communis and its seeds (Hp., Thphr., hell.), after Dsc. 4, 161 διὰ την ὡς πρὸς τὸ ζῳ̃ον τοῦ σπέρματος ἐμφέρειαν; cf. Strömberg Theophrastea 50.
Compounds: Compp., e.g. κροτωνο-φόρος (γῆ; hell. pap.).
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Unexplained. Hofmann Et. Wb. considers without motivation connection with κρότος. - From it κροτώνη f. knag, pathological excrescence on the stem (of the olive), fragments of bronchial cartiledge (Thphr., Hp., Gal.); on the formation cf. γογγρώνη and Chantraine Formation 207, Schwyzer 491. Connection with κάρταλ(λ)ος basket through *κρατώνη (J. Schmidt KZ 32, 370) is both phonetically and semantically difficult.

Frisk Etymology German

κροτών: -ῶνος
{krotṓn}
Grammar: m.
Meaning: Schaflaus, Zecke, Pediculus ovis, Ixodes (Arist., Dsk., Plu. u. a.), auch Wunderbaum, Ricinus communis und dessen Same (Hp., Thphr., hell. Pap.), nach Dsk. 4, 161 διὰ τὴν ὡς πρὸς τὸ ζῳ̃ον τοῦ σπέρματος ἐμφέρειαν; vgl. Strömberg Theophrastea 50. Kompp., z.B. κροτωνοφόρος (γῆ; hell. Pap.).
Etymology : Unerklärt. Hofmann Et. Wb. erwägt ohne Begründung Anschluß an κρότος. — Davon κροτώνη f. ‘Knorren, krankhafter Auswuchs am Stamme (der Olive), Luftröhrenknorpel’ (Thphr., Hp., Gal.); zur Bildung vgl. γογγρώνη und Chantraine Formation 207, Schwyzer 491. Die Anknüpfung an κάρταλ(λ)ος Korb über *κρατώνη (J. Schmidt KZ 32, 370) ist sowohl lautlich wie vor allem begrifflich schwierig.
