Το ρ. ῥέγκω / ῥέγχω όπως και οι υπόλοιποι τ. που συνδέονται με αυτό είναι εκφραστικοί όροι, προϊόντα ονοματοποιίας, και εμφανίζουν ποικιλία μορφών (πρβλ. ῥογχάζω, ῥόγχος, ῥωγμός, ῥογμός, ῥώχω). Η δασεία τών τύπων προέρχεται από αρκτικό s- ή F-. Κατά μια άποψη, οι τ. αυτοί μπορούν να αναχθούν σε ΙΕ ρίζα srenk-/ srungh- «ροχαλίζω» και να συνδεθούν με τ. της Κελτικής (πρβλ. αρχ. ιρλ. srennim «ροχαλίζω», μεσ. ιρλ. srēimm «ροχαλητό») και πιθ. και με τη λ. ῥύγχος].
