English (LSJ)

ᾰτος, τό, awl, Poll.10.141 (v.l. ὄπεαρ); dat. written ὑπέατι in Hdt.4.70, cf. Hsch. s.v. ὔπεα, and ῥάπτει ὑπητίῳ rupiat, Glossaria:—Dim. ὀπήτιον, τό, Nicoch.9 (dub., ὄπεαρ Kock), Hp.Epid.5.45, LXX Ex.21.6, De.15.17, Peripl.M.Rubr.17; ὀπητίδιον, Poll.7.83. (Prob. from same root as ὀπή.)

German (Pape)

[Seite 356] ατος, τό, die Schusterahle, Her. 4, 70, mit der v.l. ὕπεας, der äol. Form; weil damit Löcher gestochen werden, ὀπή.

French (Bailly abrégé)

ὀπέατος (τό) :
alêne de cordonnier.
Étymologie: ὀπή.

Russian (Dvoretsky)

ὄπεας: ατος τό атт. = ὕπεας.

Greek (Liddell-Scott)

ὄπεᾰς: -ᾰτος, τό, σουβλίον ὑποδηματοποιοῦ, Λατιν. subula, Πολυδ. Ι΄, 141· ὀπέατι ἐκ διορθώσεως παρ’ Ἡροδ. 4. 70, ἀντὶ ὑπέατι· - ὑποκορ. ὀπήτιον, τό, Νικοχάρης ἐν «Κρησὶν» 1· ὀπητίδιον, Πολυδ. Ζ΄, 83, πρβλ. Ι΄, 141. (Πιθαν. ἐκ τῆς αὐτῆς ῥίζης ἐξ ἧς τὸ ὀπή).

Greek Monotonic

ὄπεᾰς: -ᾰτος, τό (ὀπή), σούβλα, Λατ. subula, σε Ηρόδ.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: n.
Meaning: awl (Poll. 10, 141).
Other forms: V.l. -εαρ. Dat. ὑπέατι (Hdt. 4, 70). ὑπέατα ὀπήτια H. (ὕπεα τὰ ὀπίσθια cod.)
Derivatives: Dimin. ὀπήτ-ιον n. (Hp., LXX; ὑπ- Gloss.), -ίδιον n. (Poll. 7, 83); unclear Nicoch. 9.
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: After Schwyzer KZ 60, 224ff. from *ὀπα-Ϝατ- prop. "provided with an ear", from the special form of the perforated pull-through-awl; there also (decisive?) criticism of the older interpretation as "Lochgerät" (e.g. Orion: παρὰ τὸ ὀπὰς ἐμποιεῖν). The ὑπ-, which cannot we explained away must somehow be due to folketymology. - The variant shows that the word is Pre-Greek (not in Furnée). Note that forms in -αρ occur in Pre-Greek.

Middle Liddell

ὄπεᾰς, ᾰτος, εος, τό, [ὀπή]
an awl, Lat. subula, Hdt.

Frisk Etymology German

ὄπεας: (v.l. -εαρ)
{ópeas}
Forms: Dat. ὑπέατι (Hdt. 4, 70)
Grammar: n. (Poll. 10, 141),
Meaning: Ahle; ὑπέατα· ὀπήτια H. (ὕπεα· τὰ ὀπίσθια cod.).
Derivative: Demin. ὀπήτιον n. (Hp., LXX u.a.; ὑπ- Gloss.), -ίδιον n. (Poll. 7, 83); unklar Nikoch. 9.
Etymology : Nach Schwyzer KZ 60, 224ff. aus *ὀπαϝατ- eig. "mit einem Öhr versehen", von der Sonderform der gelochten Durchziehahle; ebenda auch (durchschlagende?) Kritik der älteren Auffassung als "Lochgerät" (z.B. Orion: παρὰ τὸ ὀπὰς ἐμποιεῖν). Die nicht wegzuerklärende Form ὑπ-muß irgendwie volksetymologisch bedingt sein.
