German (Pape)

[Seite 75] s. λάω

Greek (Liddell-Scott)

λῶ: θέλωβούλομαι, ἴδε λάω (Β).

French (Bailly abrégé)

λῇς, λῇ, λῶμες, λῆτε, λῶντι;
formes doriennes;
désirer vivement, vouloir.
Étymologie: p. *Fλάω = lat. volo.

Greek Monotonic

λῶ: θέλω, επιθυμώ, βλ. λάΒ.

Russian (Dvoretsky)

λῶ: (только praes.: λῇς, λῇ, pl. λῶμες, λῆτε, λῶντι) дор. = λάω II.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: v.
Meaning: want, wish (Epich., Ar., Theoc., Dor, El. inscr.)
Other forms: λῃ̃ς, λῃ̃, λῶμες etc., El. opt. λΕοιταν, Cret. opt. λΕ(ι)οι, λΕιοιεν, subj. λΕιωντι, ptc. λΕιοντος, etc., inf. (coni. Ahrens Th. 5, 77) λῆν; the gloss λεῳμι seems Ion.
Derivatives: 1. λῆμα n. will, spirit, courage, insolence (Hdt.; Aly Glotta 15, 116) with λημάτια φρονήματα, βουλεύματα H., ληματίας m. high-spirited, dare-devil (Ar. Ra. 494; Chantraine Form. 93; v. l. ληματιᾳ̃ς as from *ληματιάω), ληματόομαι in λελημάτωμαι λῆμα ἔχω εἰς τὸ ἔργον H.; 2. λῆσις (also λῆϊς Dor.) βούλησις, αἵρεσις H.
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Unexplained. Because of forms like λΕιοι, λΕιωντι etc. an orig. long diphthong lēi- was supposed, to which also λαιδρός, λιλαίομαι (WP. 2, 393 with Solmsen KZ 44, 171); this however, is impossible. Diff. s. vv.; also λίαν was wrongly adduced. Against an orig. Ϝλη- (from *u̯lēi-?) to Lat. vel-le, wollen etc. s. WP. l.c., where also other, decidedly wrong interpretations are rejected (also in Bq). Further lit. in Schwyzer 676 w. n. 2. One might start from *le-i̯o, Bechtel, Gr. Dial. 2, 192. - Cf. λωΐων.

Frisk Etymology German

λῶ: {lō̃}
Forms: λῇς, λῇ, λῶμες usw., el. Opt. λΕοιταν, kret. Opt. λΕ(ι)οι, λΕιοιεν, Konj. λΕιωντι, Ptz. λΕιοντος, -α usw., Inf. (coni. Ahrens Th. 5, 77) λῆν, (dor. u. el. Inschr., Epich., Ar., Theok. usw.)
Grammar: v.
Meaning: wollen, wünschen.
Derivative: Davon 1. λῆμα n. Wille, Entschlossenheit, Mut, Verwegenheit (vorw. poet., auch Hdt.; Aly Glotta 15, 116) mit λημάτια· φρονήματα, βουλεύματα H., ληματίας m. Wagehals (Ar. Ra. 494; Chantraine Form. 93; v. l. ληματιᾷς wie von *ληματιάω), ληματόομαι in λελημάτωμαι· λῆμα ἔχω εἰς τὸ ἔργον H.; 2. λῆσις (auch λῆϊς dor.)· βούλησις, αἵρεσις H.
Etymology : Unerklärt. Wegen Formen wie λΕιοι, λΕιωντι usw. ist ein urspr. A. 2. —Vgl. λωΐων.
