[[Ξενοφῶν]] Γρύλλῳ χαίρειν, sc. λέγει, Xenophon entbeut dem Gryllus seinen Gruß, wie Xenophon Gryllo salutem. – Daran reiht sich, bes. bei der dritten Person χαιρέτω, der Ausdruck der Geringschätzung u. Verachtung u. des von sich Weisens, weg damit, zum Henker damit u. vgl., also gleichbedeutend mit ἐῤῥέτω, Her. 4, 96; χαιρέτω βουλεύματα τὰ [[πρόσθεν]] Eur. Med. 1044; χαιρόντων πόνοι Herc. fur. 575; vgl. noch Plat. Conv. 199 a; so auch χαίροιτε ἡμῖν, Anacr. 23, 10. Dah. χαίρειν ἐᾶν od. κελεύειν, einer Person od. Folgde; οὕνεκα Od. 8, 205. – Οὐ χαιρήσεις ist ein milderer Ausdruck statt es soll dir übel bekommen, es soll dich schwer gereuen, οὐδέ τιν' οἴω Τρώων χαιρήσειν, ich meine, es soll sich kein Troer freuen, es soll allen übel bekommen, Il. 20, 363; οὐ χαιρήσετον Ar. Equ. 235, vgl. Plut. 64; s. auch das unten über das partic. Gesagte. – Der imperat. χαῖρε ist eine sehr gebr. Form des Segenswunsches u. Grußes, Freude dir, schon bei Hom., auch im dual. u. plur. χαίρετον, χαίρετε; verstärkt οὖλέ τε καὶ μέγα χαῖρε, Od. 24, 402; χαῖρε, γυνή, φιλότητι, gedeihe dir die Umarmung zum Heil, 11, 248; bes. beim ersten Zusammentreffen als Bewillkommnung, sei gegrüßt, Il. 9, 197 Od. 13, 229; so Pind. u. Tragg., Aesch. Pers. 152 Ag. 22. 494. 524 u. öfter, wie Soph. u. Eur., u. in Prosa; auch beim Abschiede, lebe wohl, Od. 5, 205, Aesch. Pers. 826 Eum. 745; u. in Prosa, Plat. Phaed. 116 c; χαίρειν καταξιῶ, wie valere iubeo, Aesch. Ag. 558; Soph. Ai. 850 u. öfter; χαίρειν προσαγορεύω Ar. Plut. 322; so auch χαίρειν λέγω, προσειπών τινα χαίρειν, Einem den Gruß χαῖρε ertheilend, ihn mit dem Gruße bewillkommnend, Xen. Mem. 3, 13, 1. – Zu Anfang der Briefe stand gew. der inf. allein, z. B. Ξενοφῶν Γρύλλῳ χαίρειν, sc. λέγει, Xenophon entbeut dem Gryllus seinen Gruß, wie Xenophon Gryllo salutem. – Daran reiht sich, bes. bei der dritten Person χαιρέτω, der Ausdruck der Geringschätzung u. Verachtung u. des von sich Weisens, weg damit, zum Henker damit u. vgl., also gleichbedeutend mit ἐῤῥέτω, Her. 4, 96; χαιρέτω βουλεύματα τὰ πρόσθεν Eur. Med. 1044; χαιρόντων πόνοι Herc. fur. 575; vgl. noch Plat. Conv. 199 a; so auch χαίροιτε ἡμῖν, Anacr. 23, 10. Dah. χαίρειν ἐᾶν od. κελεύειν, einer Person od. Sache Lebewohl sagen, ihr entsagen, sie gut sein lassen, nicht danach fragen, sie vernachlässigen, od. stärker, sie verwünschen, s. Valck. zu Her. 9, 41 u. zu Eur. Hipp. 133, wie Schäf. mel. p. 34; vgl. Plat. Prot. 347 e Phaedr. 230 a Gorg. 458 b; τὴν αὐλητρίδα χαίρειν ἐᾶν Conv. 176 e; τὸ διαῤῥιπτεῖν εἴα χαίρειν Xen. Ai. 112 χαίρειν, Ἀθάνα, τἄλλ' ἐγώ σ' ἐφίεμαι zu nehmen, wo Andere, wie Lob., es zu stark findend, χαίρειν durch contentam esse übersetzen; τὴν σὴν Κύπριν πόλλ' ἐγὼ χαίρειν λέγω Eur. Hipp. 113; πολλὰ εἰπόντα χαίρειν τῷ ἀληθεῖ Plat. Phaedr. 272 e; Phaed. 64 c; τὰ δ' ἄλλα ἐπιτηδεύματα χαίρειν χρὴ προσαγορεύειν Legg. VI, 771 a. – Das partic. χαίρων ist = froh, freudig, Hom. öfter; Her. gew. so κεχαρηκώς; in Vrbdgn mit andern Zeitwörtern durch gern, willig zu übersetzen; aber χαίρων ἀπαλλάττει ist = er kommt glücklich, ungestraft, wie wir sagen »mit heiler Haut«, »mit blauem Auge« davon, Her. 3, 69. 9, 106; οὐδὲ χαίρων ταῦτα τολμήσει λέγειν Ar. Ach. 537; οὔτι χαιρήσων Vesp. 185; Ran. 843; Soph. O. R. 363 οὔ τι χαίρων δίς γε πημονὰς ἐρεῖς; Ant. 755 Phil. 1283; χαίροντα πρός τινος ἀπαλλάττειν Her. 9, 106; τοῦτον οὐδεὶς χαίρων ἀδικήσει, nicht ungestraft, Plat. Gorg. 510 d; Xen.
