Russian (Dvoretsky)

1) хобот (sc. τοῦ ἐλέφαντος Arst.);
2) хоботок (sc. τῆς μυίας Arst.);
3) щупальце (sc. τῆς σηπίας Arst.).
Frisk Etymological English
-ίδος
Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: elefants trunk (Arist., hell.), also metaph. of the suction-pipe of an insect and of the two arms\/tentacles of the ten-armed squid (Arist.).
Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]
Etymology: Formation like ἀγκαλίς, ἐπιγουνίς, κοπίς and other names of body-parts and instruments, rather directly from βόσκω as from the rare βοσκός (cf. Chantraine Form. 338). The prefix has local sense as in πρό-δομος space before a.o.; so litt. "grazing in front". Diff. προβοσκός (-ος) m. under-herder (Hdt. 1, 113) as πρόδουλος. -- Lat. LW [loanword] proboscis, promuscis.
Middle Liddell
προβοσκίς, ίδος, ἡ,
a means of providing food: an elephant's proboscis, Arist.
Frisk Etymology German
προβοσκίς: -ίδος
{proboskís}
Grammar: f.
Meaning: Elefantenrüssel (Arist., hell.), auch übertr. vom Saugrüssel eines Insekts und von den zwei Tentakelarmen des zehnarmigen Tintenfisches (Arist.).
Etymology : Bildung wie ἀγκαλίς, ἐπιγουνίς, κοπίς und andere Körperteil- und Gerätenamen, eher direkt von βόσκω als vom seltenen βοσκός (vgl. Chantraine Form. 338). Das Präfix hat lokalen Sinn wie in πρόδομος Vorraum u.a.; also wörtlich "vorn weidend". Dagegen προβοσκός (-ος) m. Unterhirt (Hdt. 1, 113) wie πρόδουλος. — Lat. LW proboscis, promuscis.
