[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Ο τ. καθοίκι < μσν. καθοίκιν < κατ(α)- + -οίκι(ο)ν (< οἶκος) (πρβλ. τη μσν. σημασία «οικιακά σκεύη»). Δυσερμήνευτη ωστόσο είναι η δάσυνση, που προέκυψε ίσως από αναλογική επίδραση του καθίζω, στο οποίο μάλιστα ορισμένοι ανάγουν απευθείας τη λ., θεωρώντας ορθότερη τη γραφή καθίκι (πρβλ. και τις αντίστοιχες λ. άλλων γλωσσών, επίσης συναφείς προς την έννοια του καθίσματος, όπως γαλλ. selle, αγγλ. stool, ιταλ. segetta). Τέλος, η γραφή καθήκι δεν δικαιολογείται, εφόσον το καθίζω και ο αόριστός του κάθισα γράφονται με -ι- και όχι με -η-].
