Στυγὸς ὕδωρ, ὅς τε μέγιστος | ὅρκος δεινότατός τε πέλει μακάρεσσι θεοῖσιν, Il. 15.37 f.—(2) baleful (if α copulative), or mad, of the suitors' contest with the bow, Od. 21.81 (echoed by Odysseus, Od. 22.5). —Signif. (2) may be assumed in Ξ instead of (1), representing the Styx as baleful to him who swears falsely in its name.
