[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Αβέβαιης ετυμολ. Ο τ. οὐλή πρέπει να έχει προέλθει από θ. Fολ- με κατάλ. -σᾱ ή -νᾱ. Η αναγωγή της λ. στην ΙΕ ρίζα wel- «αρπάζω, χαράζω, τραυματίζω, βαθιά πληγή» (πρβλ. ἁλίσκομαι, λατ. vello «μαδώ, ξεριζώνω»)και η σύνδεση της με τ. όπως: λατ. volnus, -eris «τραύμα, πληγή», γαλατ. gweli «πληγή», αρχ. ιρλδ. Fuil «αίμα» προσκρούει σε δυσχέρειες τόσο μορφολογικές όσο και σημασιολογικές].
