Ε. 404· ― ἐν τῷ ἑνικῷ: κατερχομένους ἐπιωγὴν (διάφ. γρ. ἐπ᾿ ἰωγὴν) «σκέπην, ὑφ᾿ ἧς ὁ ἄνεμος ἄγνυται» (Σχόλ.), Ἀπολλ. Ρόδ. Δ. 1640, Ἡσύχ.

French (Bailly abrégé)

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: f. pl.
Meaning: places of shelter for ships (ε 404, A. R. 4, 1640 [sg.], Opp. H. 1, 602).
Origin: IE [Indo-European] [??][cf. p. 1110] *u̯h₂g- break
Etymology: As verbal noun to ἐπι-(Ϝ)άγνυμαι break against sth., so prop. place, where wind and waves are broken; compare κυματωγή < *κυματο-Ϝαγή (Hdt.), and βορέω ὑπ' ἰωγῃ̃ (ξ 533) prop. "under the breaking of B.", i. e. protected against B.; the latter with reduplication *Ϝι-Ϝωγ-η , *u̯i-u̯oh₂g-; so ἐπιωγή prob. from *ἐπιϜιϜωγή. Bechtel Lex. s. v. prefers a unreduplicated *ἐπι-Ϝωγή beside Ϝαγή. On the formation Jacobsohn Gnomon 2, 384.

Middle Liddell

places of shelter for ships, roadsteads, Od.

Frisk Etymology German

ἐπιωγαί: {epiōgaí}
Grammar: f. pl.
Meaning: etwa Anlegeplätze, Ankerplätze (ε 404, A. R. 4, 1640 [sg.], Opp. H. 1, 602).
Etymology : Als Verbalnomen zu ἐπι-(ϝ)άγνυμαι ‘sich gegen etwas brechen’ wohl eig. Ort, wo sich Wind und Wogen brechen; zu vergleichen sind einerseits κυματωγή aus *κυματοϝαγή (Hdt. u. a.) Ort, wo sich die Wogen brechen, Meeresstrand, anderseits βορέω ὑπ’ ἰωγῇ (ξ 533) eig. "unter dem Bruch des B.", d. h. ‘im Schutz vor dem B.’; letzteres mit Reduplikation *ϝιϝωγή; ἐπιωγή wohl somit auch aus *ἐπιϝιϝωγή. Bechtel Lex. s. v. zieht vor, ein reduplikationsloses *ἐπιϝωγή neben ϝαγή anzusetzen. Zum Bildungstypus Jacobsohn Gnomon 2, 384.
