Greek Monolingual

ē(r)zis «κέδρος» και το αρχ. ινδ. ŗksara- «ακίδα, αγκάθι» δεν είναι βέβαιη. ΠAP. αρχ. αρκεύθινος, αρκευθίς].

Russian (Dvoretsky)

ἄρκευθος:можжевельник Theocr., Plut., Diod.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: juniper, Juniperus macrocarpa (Hp.).
Other forms: ἄργετος· ἡ ἄρκευθος, Κρῆτες H.
Derivatives: ἀρκευθίς, -ίδος f. juniper-berry (Hp.) with ἀρκευθιδίτης (οἶνος) wine from or perfumed with juniper-berries (Dsc. 5, 46 ed. Sprengel).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Because the twigs can be twined, Lidén IF 18, 507f. connected ἄρκυς net with a θ-suffix (Chantr. Form. 368, who remarks that most of these words are non-IE; Schwyzer 510f.); not very probable. The gloss is certainly cognate; thus R.A. Brown, Pre-Greek speech on Crete 25; on its suffix Fur. 115 n. 3. The word has always been connected with Slavic words, Russ. rakíta etc. willow, Salix fragilis, *arkuta. Cf. Beekes, 2000 [125 J. Idg. Graz], 27. It is clearly a substr. word.

Etymology: Wegen der zum Flechten verwendbaren Zweige vielleicht nach Lidén IF 18, 507f. zu ἄρκυς Netz mit griechischer θ-Erweiterung eines u-Stamms (vgl. Chantraine Formation 368, Schwyzer 510f.). Jedenfalls nicht besser mit Persson Beitr. 964 (nach Endzelin KZ 44, 59ff.) zu lett. ē(r)zis Wacholder, aind. r̥kṣara- m. Spitze, Dorn. Fremder Ursprung ist natürlich keineswegs ausgeschlossen.
