Ο τ. κρώπιον προέρχεται πιθ. < κρώψ- και ανάγεται στην εκτεταμένηετεροιωμένη βαθμίδα (s)krō-p- της ΙΕ ρίζας (s)kre-p-, που αποτελεί παρεκτεταμένη (με χειλικό -ρ-) μορφή της ρίζας (s)kre- «κόβω».
