English (LSJ)

ὁ, gen. κνωπός, shortened for κινώπετον, Nic.Th.499,520, 751. II = τυφλός, Zonar.

Greek (Liddell-Scott)

κνώψ: ὁ, γεν. κνωπός, συντετμημένον ἀντὶ τοῦ κινώπετον, Νικ. Θ. 499, 520, 751· ― ὁ δὲ Ἡσύχ. ἔχει κνωπεύς, έως, ὁ, ἄρκτος. ΙΙ. Κατὰ Σουΐδ.: κνὼψ = τυφλὸς (πρβλ. κνέφας).

Greek Monolingual

κνώψ, -ωπός, ὁ (Α)
κινώπετον.
[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Αγνωστης ετυμολ. Ίσως πρόκειται για παραλλαγή του κνώδαλον, κατά τα κνίψ, σήψ].

Frisk Etymological English

κνωπός
Grammatical information: m.
Meaning: a wild animal, of snakes a. o. (Nic. Th.).
Derivatives: κνωπεύς ἄρκτος. ἔνιοι κνουπεύς (H.; cf. Boßhardt Die Nom. auf -ευς 85). Here also κυνοῦπες ἄρκτος (for -οι?). Μακεδόνες H. Further also κινώπετον poisonous animal, snake.
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Not a cross of κνώδαλον and another word (κλώψ, κνίψ, σήψ). Acc. to Fick 3, 97 and Persson Beitr. 1, 139 to OWNo. (hnafa), pret. hnōf cut off. Wrong Baunack Phil. 70, 456f. With sec. vowel also prob. κινώπετον. The variant forms point to a Pre-Greek word. On sec. vowels in Pre-Greek Fur. 383f.

Frisk Etymology German

κνώψ: κνωπός
{knṓps}
Grammar: m.
Meaning: N. eines wilden Tieres, von Schlangen u. a. (Nik. Th.).
Derivative: Dazu κνωπεύς· ἄρκτος. ἔνιοι κνουπεύς (H.; vgl. Boßhardt Die Nom. auf -ευς 85). Auch κυνοῦπες· ἄρκτος (für -οι?). Μακεδόνες H.
Etymology : Nicht sicher erklärt. Ob Kreuzung von κνώδαλον und einem anderen Wort (κλώψ, κνίψ, σήψ o. ä.)? Nach Fick 3, 97 und Persson Beitr. 1, 139 zu awno. (hnafa), Prät. hnōf abknipsen. Verfehlt Baunack Phil. 70, 456f. — Durch Erweiterung (mit Sproßvokal) wahrscheinlich κινώπετον (s. d.).
