[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Αβέβαιης ετυμολ. Πρόκειται για αρχαϊκού τύπου ουδ., που ανάγεται σε αρχικό τ. ψέφαρ, όπως υποδηλώνει το παράγωγο ψεφαρός (πρβλ. γέρας). Κατά μία άποψη, το ουδ. ψέφας, όπως και τα συνώνυμα κνέφας, δνόφος / γνόφος, ζόφος, ανάγονται σε ΙΕ ρίζα kwsep- «σκοτεινός» και συνδέονται με το αρχ. ινδ. ksap «νύχτα», ενώ οι φωνητικές τους διαφορές αποδίδονται σε γλωσσικό ταμπού].
