genitive Κῶ, ἡ, Cos (A. V. Coos) (now Stanco or Stanchio (which has arisen from a slurred pronunciation of ἐς ταν Κῶ (modern Greek) like Stambul from ἐς ταν πόλιν. (Hackett))), a small island of the Aegean Sea, over against the cities of Cnidus and Halicarnassus, celebrated for its fertility and especially for its abundance of wine and grain: Κῶν Griesbach (followed by subsequent editors) has restored Κῶ, as in Matthiae, § 70 note 3; Winer's Grammar, § 8,2a.; (Buttmann, 21 (19); WH's Appendix, p. 157).
