   A black all round: Hom. always epith. of φρένες (best written divisim, as by Alex. critics), darkened on either side, of strong emotions, as anger, Il.1.103, 17.83, Od.4.661; courage, Il.17.499,573: prob. metaph. from an angry sea.    2 generally, ἀ. κόνις coal-black dust, AP7.738 (Theodorid.).

ἀμφιμέλας: -αινα, ᾰν, ὁλόγυρα μέλας, παρ’ Ὁμ. ἀείποτε, φρένες ἀμφιμέλαιναι - τὸ ὁποῖον δύναται ἐνιαχοῦ νὰ ἑρμηνευθῇ: ἐσκοτισμένος ὑπὸ ὀργῆς ἢ θλίψεως, Ἰλ. Α. 103, Ρ. 83, Ὀδ. Δ. 661· οὐχὶ ὅμως καὶ ἐν Ἰλ. Ρ. 499, 573· ὥστε εἶναι πιθανὸν ὅτι ἡ λέξις ἀείποτε ἀναφέρεται εἰς τὴν θέσιν τῶν φρενῶν, ἤτοι τοῦ διαφράγματος, αἱ ἐν σκότει κείμεναι, αἱ ὑπὸ σκότους περιβαλλόμεναι φρένες.
