[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Ο τ. κρομμύδι < κρομμύ-διον (υποκορ. του κρόμμυον), ενώ ο τ. κρεμμύδι προέρχεται είτε από τον τ. κρέμμυον (μτγν. του κρόμμυον) είτε από κρομμύδι(ον) με τροπή του -ο σε -ε- λόγω της φωνητικής επίδρασης του -ρ-. Η γρφ. με ένα -μ- είναι ήδη αρχ. (πρβλ. κρόμυον).
