(WH Ἰερεμίας (see their Introductory § 408); so st in Ιερεμιου (Buttmann, 17 (16), 8), ὁ (יִרְמְיָה or יִרְמְיָהוּ, equivalent to יָהּ יִרְמֶה 'Jehovah casts forth' (his enemies?), or 'Jehovah hurls' (his thunderbolts?); cf. Bleek, Einl. in das A. T. § 206, p. 469 (cf. B. D. under the word Smith's Bible Dictionary, Jeremiah)), Jeremiah (A. V. also Jeremias, Jeremy), a famous Hebrew prophet, who prophesied from (circa) 627 B.C.> until the destruction of Jerusalem (586 B.C.>). Afterward, he departed into Egypt, where he appears to have died; (cf. B. D. under the word Jeremiah , I:6): Matthew , the passage cited)).
