Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: buttocks (Hp., com., Herod.).
Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [438] *ǵhengh- `step
Etymology: The almost complete identity with Skt. jaghána- m. n. buttocks can hardly be a coincidence; the further analysis remains hypothetical. Since J. Schmidt KZ 25, 112 a. 116; 32, 373f. κοχώνη is explained as assimilated from *καχώνα, with *καχ- = Skt.. jagh- as zero grade of jáṅghā f. `lower thigh-bone etc. (to Goth. gaggan `go, IE. *ǵhengh-). Objections by Specht KZ 66, 197ff., who because of προχῶναι buttocks (Archipp. 41) separates κοχώνη from jaghána- etc. and wants to connect χάσκω and cognates. But προχῶναι can be a comic distortion of κοχώνη after πρωκτός (Güntert Reimwortbildungen 122)(?). Diff. on προχῶναι (after προχωννύω) Pisani Ist. Lomb. 73 : 2, 22f. Mayrhofer, EWAia I 563 also finds no solution.
