-ιος
Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: calf, heifer, metaph. young girl (ep. κ 410); beside it πόρταξ f. id. (P 4) after δέλφαξ, σκύλαξ a.o.
Other forms: more usual is πόρτις, -ιος (ep. since Ε 162).
Dialectal forms: Myc. instr. pl. potipi \/potiphi\/
Derivatives: πορτι-τρόφος feeding calves (h. Ap., B.); πορ-τάκινον (-ιον?) μοσχίον, πορτάζει (-ακίζει?) δαμαλίζεται H.
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Formation like τρόπις, τρόχις, κόρις a.o. (Solmsen Wortforsch. 160, Schwyzer 462); with πόρτις cf. μάντις, δόμορτις a.o. (Schw. 271 a. 504 n. 3). With πόρτις Arm. ort` calf can be identical except for the stemauslaut (gen. etc. ort`-u); on Gr. τ for IE *th (= Arm. t) cf. cases like πλατύς and ὀστέον. One has compared Skt. pr̥thu-ka- m. young, child, young animal, but the connection with ort, πόρτις is doubted by Mayrhofer s. v. (s. also id. Sprache 7, 180 f.) with Brugmann on good grounds. A further cognate is supposed in Germ. in MHG verse, NHG Färse f. young cow (PGm. *fársī < IE *pór-s-ī ), to which further also OHG far, farro, OE fearr m. Farre, younger bull (PGm. *farzá(n)- < IE *por-s-ó-). The word may belong to the IE verb for give birth (prop. bring forth) in Lat. pariō (WP. 2, 41, Pok. 818, W.-Hofmann s. v.). It has been connected also with πορεῖν etc. (s. v.). After Solmsen a.o. prop. "(new)born"; ? -- Lith. periù, -ė́ti brood, sit on the eggs is prob. to be kept away; s. lit. in Fraenkel Wb. s. pẽras. On Venet. Pora s. Mastrelli Par. del Pass. 15, 282ff. w. rich lit.

Middle Liddell

πόρις, ιος, ἡ, [poetic for πόρτις, Od., Eur.]

Frisk Etymology German

πόρις: -ιος (ep. poet. seit κ 410),
{póris}
Forms: etwas gewöhnlicher πόρτις, -ιος (ep. poet. seit Ε 162)
Grammar: f.
Meaning: Kalb, Färse, übertr. junges Mädchen; daneben πόρταξ f. ib. (P 4) nach δέλφαξ, σκύλαξ u.a.
Derivative: Davon πορτιτρόφος Kälber ernährend (h. Ap., B.); πορτάκινον (-ιον?)· μοσχίον, πορτάζει (-ακίζει?)· δαμαλίζεται H.
Etymology : Bildung wie τρόπις, τρόχις, κόρις u.a. (Solmsen Wortforsch. 160, Schwyzer 462); zu πόρτις vgl. μάντις, δόμορτις u.a. (Schw. 271 u. 504 A. 3). Mit πόρτις kann arm. ort‘ Kalb bis auf den Stammauslaut (Gen. usw. ort‘-u) identisch sein; zu gr. τ für idg. th (= arm. ) vgl. Fälle wie πλατύς und ὀστέον. Eine Bildung auf -thu- liegt tatsächlich vor in aind. pr̥thu-ka- m. Junge, Kind, Tierjunges, aber die Zusammenstellung mit ort́, πόρτις wird von Mayrhofer s. v. (s. auch dens. Sprache 7, 180 f.) mit Brugmann aus guten Gründen angezweifelt. Ein weiterer Verwandter wird auf germ. Gebiet in mhd. verse, nhd. Färse f. junge Kuh (urg. *fársī < idg. *pór-s-ī) vermutet, wozu noch ahd. far, farro, ags. fearr m. Farre, junger Stier (urg. *farzá(n)- < idg. *por-s-ó-). Das Wort kann zum idg. Verb für gebären (eig. hervorbringen) in lat. pariō gehören (WP. 2, 41, Pok. 818, W.-Hofmann s. v.) und wäre somit letzten Endes auch mit πορεῖν, πέρα usw. (s. dd.) verwandt. Nach Solmsen a. O. eig. "(neu)geborenes"; ob nicht vielmehr "die (Erst)gebärende" ? — Lit. periù, -ė́ti brüten, auf den Eiern sitzen ist wahrscheinlich fernzuhalten; s. Lit. bei Fraenkel Wb. s. pẽras. Zu venet. Pora s. Mastrelli Par. del Pass. 15, 282ff. m. reicher Lit.
