Pylos.—(1) a city in Messenian Elis, on the coast opposite the southern extremity of the island of Sphacteria; the home of Neleus and Nestor. Under the epithet ‘sandy’ Pylos the entire region is designated, Il. 2.77, Od. 3.4.—(2) a city in Triphylia of Elis, south of the Alphēus, Il. 11.671 ff. —(3) see πύλος.
