Bei Sp. sind φαινόμενα die Erscheinungen am Himmel, die auf- und untergehenden Gestirne, welche sich am äußern Horizonte zeigen, Arat. – Durch Entblößung sichtbar werden, Il. 22, 324 Od. 18, 68; und so πᾶσ' ἔντοσθε φάνεσκε, ὑπένερθε δὲ γαῖα φάνεσκε 12, 241. 242, wie γαῖα μέλαινα φάνεσκε 11, 587, u. μετὰ πρώτοισι φάνεσκε, er zeigte sich unter den Ersten, Il. 11, 64; so Tragg. u. in Prosa. – C. inf., zu sein scheinen, πῶς ὔμμιν ἀνὴρ ὅδε φαίνεται εἶναι εἶδός τε μέγεθός τε; Od. 11, 336; δμωάων, ἥτις τοι ἀρίστη φαίνεται εἶναι 15, 25; οὐ γάρ σφιν ἐφαίνετο κέρδιον εἶναι 14, 355; – c. partic., erscheinen als Einer, welcher – , Ἄρης ἐφαίνετο ἰὼν εἰς οὐρανόν Il. 5, 867 (wie ὅστις φαίνηται ἄριστος, wer als der Beste erscheint, O, l. 14, 106, ἥδε δέ οἱ κατὰ θυμὸν ἀρίσ τη φαίνε το βουλή Il. 2, 5 u. öfter); u. so bei Her. u. den Att. zur Bezeichnung des Einleuchtenden, Offenbaren, Gewissen, φαίνεται ὁ νόμος ἡμᾶς βλάπ των, es ist offenbar, daß das Gesetz uns gefährdet, während φαίνεται ὁ νόμος ἡμᾶς βλάψειν heißt es hat den Anschein, scheint, daß das Gesetz uns gefährden werde, Dem. Lpt. 35, vgl. Wolf zu der Stelle p. 259; εὖ ποιεῦντες φαίνεσθε, zeigt euch als Wohlthäter, Her. 9, 89; νῦν τις ὑμέων εὖ ποιήσας φανήτω 6, 9; φανείη ἐών Pind. N. 4, 30; πέφανται σοφός P. 5, 107, πέφανται κυναγέτας N. 6, 13; πρὶν ἂν θεῶν τις διάδοχος τῶν σῶν πόνων φανῇ Aesch. Prom. 1030, u. öfter; οὐκ ἂν φανεῖμεν πήματ' ἔρξαντες τόσα Pers. 772; Ag. 579; dagegen ἡμῖν μὲν Ἑρμῆς οὐκ ἄκαιρα φαίνεται λέγειν Prom. 1038, vgl. 217. 317; ὅστις πέφασμαι φύς τ' ἀφ' ὧν οὐ χρῆν Soph. O. R. 1184; εἰ φανήσομαι τάχα κακὸν μέγ' ἐκπράξασα Trach. 663; Ant. 158; φαίνεται ὀρθῶς ἐμοί Ar. Eccl. 875; τὴν νύκτα φαίνεται πῦρ ἀναδιδοῦσα πολύ Thuc. 3, 88; καὶ νῦν φαίνομαι δύο καθορᾶν εἴδη Plat. Soph. 235 d; τὸν σοφιστὴν ὅ τί ποτέ ἐστι φαίνει ἀγνοῶν Prot. 313 c; Lach. 186 b u. öfter; ἐὰν μὲν ἐγὼ φαίνωμαι ἀδικῶν, wenn es sich ergiebt, daß ich Unrecht gethan habe, Xen. An. 5, 7,5; u. c. inf., 2, 3,13 Cyr. 2, 2,1. – Dah. es uns oft als bloße Umschreibung von εἶναι erscheint, φαίνομαι ψευδής, ich erscheine als ein Lügner, = ψεύδομαι, Xen. Cyr. 5, 2,4 und sonst. – Λόγος φαινόμενος, eine deutliche Rede; τὸ φαινόμενον, das Einleuchtende, Offenbare, Augenscheinliche, aber auch das was uns scheint oder dünkt, im Ggstz dessen, was ist, οὕτω καὶ νῦν τοῖς ἐκ τοῦ λόγου φαινομένοις προσθέσθαι Dem. 18, 227; ἁπλοῦς λόγος καὶ φαινόμενος Pol. 17, 1,12, vgl. 17, 14, 5; λέγειν τὸ φαινόμενον 5, 41, 6, u. öfter. – So im Antworten φαίνεται = ja, so ist es, Plat. Prot. 333 e u. öfter. – Οὐδαμοῦ φανῆναι, nirgends erscheinen, d. i. für Nichts geachtet werden, Gorg. 456 c Phaed. 72 b. – Der aor. med. φήνασθαι = sich, oder als das Seinige zeigen, angeben, Soph. Phil. 944. – Eigtl. pass. gezeigt, angezeigt werden, bes. vor Gericht, wozu bei den Att. immer der aor. I. ἐφάνθην gehört, der bei Hom. stets in der Bdtg des aor. II. gebraucht wird, wie Dem. 58, 13. – Absolut, φαίνειν τινί, Jem. leuchten, ihm Licht vortragen, Od. 7, 102. 19, 25; – so vom Monde, von den Sternen u. anderm Lichte, scheinen, leuchten, Plat. Tim. 34 b, Theocr. 2, 11; bes. heißt der Planet Saturn ὁ φαίνων. – Uebh. = φαίνομαι, Seidl. Eur. El. 1321, φαίνουσί τινες δαίμονες, obgleich Wunderl. obs. crit p. 99 diesen Gebrauch bestreitet. – [Im fut. φανῶ scheint die erste Sylbe zuweilen lang gebraucht zu sein, Ar. Eccl. 300; vgl. Apoll.
