2. as a μεσίτης is a sponsor or surety (Josephus, Antiquities 4,6, 7 ταῦτα ὀμνυντες ἔλεγον καί τόν Θεόν μεσιτην ὧν ὑπισχνουντο ποιούμενοι (cf.
