A derivation from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pley- (“to [[split]], [[splice]]”) is semantically possible comparing Proto-Germanic *skītaną (“to [[defecate]]”), which derives from Proto-Indo-European *skeyd- (“to [[cut off]]”). Alternatively, Beekes suggests a Pre-Greek origin.
