[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Κατά την επικρατέστερη άποψη, πρόκειται για δάνεια λ. ανατολικής προέλευσης, δεδομένου ότι και το πουλί ταώς «παγώνι» εισήχθη στην Ελλάδα από την Ινδία μέσω της Περσίας. Παράλληλο δάνειο, εξάλλου, θεωρήθηκε και το λατ. pāvō. Κατ' άλλους, όμως, τόσο το ελλ. ταώς όσο και το λατ. pāvō εμφανίζουν δυσερμήνευτα αρκτικά τ- και p- και γι' αυτό υποστηρίχθηκε ότι πρόκειται για ονοματοποιημένες λ. Η άποψη αυτή, πάντως, δεν θεωρείται ικανοποιητική, ενώ η πρώτη ενισχύεται και από τον τ. toghai της γλώσσας Τάμιλ. Η λ., τέλος, χρησιμοποιήθηκε για να δηλώσει και ένα είδος ψαριού, το οποίο, λόγω της ποικιλίας τών χρωμάτων του, θυμίζει το παγώνι].
