[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. < θυη-, μορφή με την οποία απαντά η λ. θύος ως α' συνθετικό (πρβλ. θυη-δόχος, θυη-πόλος) + -φάγος (< θ. φαγ- του ρ. εσθίω, πρβλ. αόρ. β' έ-φαγ-ον), πρβλ. σαρκο-φάγος, χορτο-φάγος.
