[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Πρόκειται για δάνεια λέξη άγνωστης προελεύσεως που προωτοεμφανίστηκε πιθ. στην περιοχή της Μικράς Ασίας κατά τη 2η χιλιετία, όταν άκμαζε το εμπόριο του ελεφαντόδοντου. Το τρίγλωσσο κείμενο του Ras Shamra παραδίδει και χεττ. τ. lahpas «δόντι (ελέφαντα), ελεφαντόδοντο», που είναι επίσης δάνεια λέξη. Λόγω της πρώτης συλλαβής ο ελλ. τ. μπορεί να συνδεθεί με το χαμιτ. elu «ελέφαντας», ενώ ο εν γένει σχηματισμός του ακολουθεί το πρότυπο του τ. αδάμας. Η λ. ελέφας εισήχθη στη Λατ. με τις μορφές elephas και elephantus, που διαφέρουν από τον λατ. τ. ebur, «ελεφαντόδοντο» ο οποίος συνδέεται με αιγυπτ. ābu, κοπτ. εβ(ο)κ, αρχ. ινδ. ibha-. Τέλος, οι νεώτεροι ευρωπαϊκοί τύποι που δηλώνουν αυτό το ζώο ανάγονται στο λατ. elephas (πρβλ. γαλλ. elephant, αγγλ. elephant, γερμ. Elefant). Ο τ. ελέφας με τη μορφή ελεφαντο- χρησιμοποιείται ως α' συνθετικό τόσο με σημασία «ελέφαντας» (πρβλ. ελεφαντοθήρας) όσο και με σημασία «ελεφαντόδοντο» (πρβλ. ελεφαντουργός)].
