Thermopylae, ārum, f. (Θερμοπύλαι), ein Engpaß in Lokris an der Grenze von Thessalien (auf der einen Seite von Sümpfen u. dem Meere, auf der anderen vom höchsten Gipfel des Öta gebildet; benannt nach den dort befindlichen warmen, dem Herkules geweihten Bädern und einer von den Phocäern an der schmalsten, nur acht Fuß breiten Stellte erbauten Mauer), in dem Leonidas mit seinen 300 Spartanern i.J. 480 v.
