Etymology: αἴλιοι may be itacistic notation for *ε῎λιοι (*ἕλιοι). ἀ- in ἀέλιοι is considered as the copulative α-. Cognate ON svilar m. pl. brothers-in-law, whose wives are sisters, from *su̯e-lo-, su̯e-l-io(n)-; an l-derivative of the reflexive *su̯e. Cf. Specht Ursprung 166, further Mezger Word 4, 99.
