ὀρταλίς
Quibus enim nihil est in ipsis opis ad bene beateque vivendum → Every age is burdensome to those who have no means of living well and happily
English (LSJ)
-ίδος, ἡ, chicken, fowl, Nic. Al.294.
German (Pape)
[Seite 387] (von ὄρνυμι, mit ὄρνις verwandt), ίδος, ἡ, dor. u. poet. = νεοσσός, σκύμνος, das Junge eines Tieres, bes. junger Vogel, Küchlein, Nic. Al. 295. Häufiger in den abgeleiteten Formen.
Greek (Liddell-Scott)
ὀρτᾰλίς: -ίδος, ἡ, νεογνὸν ζῷον, οἱονδήποτε, Λατ. pullus, νεοσσός, νεογνὸν πτηνόν, ὀρνίθιον· καθόλου πτηνὸν κατοικίδιον, «ὀρνίθι», Νικ. Ἀλ. 295. - Βοιωτ. λέξ. πρβλ. ὀρτάλιχος
Greek Monolingual
ὀρταλίς, η (Α)
Frisk Etymological English
Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: hen (Nic. Al. 294).
Derivatives: ὀρτάλιχος m. young bird (A. Ag. 54, Ar. Ach. 871, AP, Opp.), young animal (S. Fr. 793), chick (Theoc.), -ιχεύς m. id. (Nic. Al. 228: acc. -ῆα, metr. enlargement at verse-end; Bosshardt 64). Denomin. ἀν-ορταλίζω to prance, to clap the wings like a hen (cock) v.t. (Ar. Eq. 1344).
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Popular formations in -ίς resp. -ιχος (ἀηδονίς, κόψιχος etc.; Chantraine 344 a. 403, Schwyzer 465 a. 498), first from an λ-stem (unless rather with complete -αλίς as in συκ-αλίς, δορκ-αλίς [: δορκ-άς] a.o.), lastly from a noun *ὀρτος of unknown meaning. The obvious connection with ὄρνυμαι rise, come into movement (cf. κονι-ορ-τός, θέ-ορ-τος) does not mean much semantically. Cf. Baunack Phil. 70, 465 f.
Frisk Etymology German
ὀρταλίς: {ortalís}
Grammar: f.
Meaning: Huhn (Nik.Al. 294);
Derivative: ὀρτάλιχος m. junger Vogel (A. Ag. 54, Ar. Ach. 871, AP, Opp.), Tierjunges (S. Fr. 793), Küchlein (Theok.), -ιχεύς m. ib. (Nik.Al. 228: Akk. -ῆα, metr. Erweiterung am Versende; Bosshardt 64). Denominativum ἀνορταλίζω ‘wie ein Huhn (Hahn) stolzieren, mit den Flügeln schlagen’ o.a. (Ar. Eq. 1344).
Etymology : Volkstümlichdeminutive Bildungen auf -ίς bzw. -ιχος (ἀηδονίς, κόψιχος usw.; Chantraine 344 u. 403, Schwyzer 465 u. 498), zunächst von einem λ-Stamm (wenn nicht eher mit einheitlichem -αλίς wie in συκαλίς, δορκαλίς [: δορκάς u.a.), letzten Endes von einem Nomen *ὀρτος unbekannter Bed. Die formal sich aufdrängende Anknüpfung an ὄρνυμαι sich regen, sich erheben (vgl. κονιορτός, θέορτος) besagt semantisch sehr wenig. Vgl. Baunack Phil. 70, 465 f. Mit ὄρνις, ὄρνεον besteht höchstens eine indirekte, sehr entfernte Verwandtschaft.
